We’re all searching for something in life. No matter our age or profession, we set out on a path without ever quite knowing where it will lead. That idea feels central to Matthew Shear’s wonderful and funny debut film, Fantasy Life. The premise alone is refreshingly grounded: a forty-something man loses his job, begins experiencing frequent panic attacks, and unexpectedly falls in love with the mother of the children he’s hired to nanny. Even on paper, it sounds like a winding journey, but in execution, Fantasy Life becomes a beautifully observed slice of life- filled with humor, charm, romance, and a disarming sense of honesty. It’s a remarkable first feature.
How much you connect with Fantasy Life will largely depend on your feelings toward its protagonist, Sam (played by Shear). In his early forties, anxious and adrift, Sam is fired from his job at a law firm and soon after suffers a panic attack that leaves him injured in a bookstore. Now unemployed and working through his anxieties with his therapist (Judd Hirsch), Sam fears he’s deeply unhappy with himself. Through a family connection, he lands a job caring for the children of Dianne (Amanda Peet) and her husband David (Alessandro Nivola). It’s in this new role as a “manny” that Sam develops an attraction to Dianne- one that complicates an already fragile marriage.
What makes Fantasy Life resonate is Shear’s writing, which blends dry wit with an unflinching emotional honesty. Sam is an unusually earnest character—a quiet, introspective man burdened by shame, yet quietly searching for connection and meaning. The film’s authenticity shines most in its dialogue, particularly in Amanda Peet’s performance, which is the finest of her career. Her portrayal of Dianne- an actress and mother struggling to balance a shifting career, a strained marriage, and an unexpected emotional connection- feels lived-in and deeply human. If awards season were today, Peet would undoubtedly be in the conversation.
The film’s success extends beyond its writing to a stellar ensemble cast that includes Hirsch, Andrea Martin, Bob Balaban, Jessica Harper, Holland Taylor, and Zosia Mamet. Still, it’s Alessandro Nivola who nearly steals the film. As David, a once-cool, aging father grappling with his own inadequacies, Nivola brings both humor and pathos. There’s a moment when he sports a handlebar mustache that perfectly encapsulates his character- a man clinging to an identity that no longer quite fits, emblematic of the quiet crises many adults face as they try to hold on to relevance.
In a cinematic landscape where sincerity can often feel in short supply, Fantasy Life stands out as something special. As a debut, it marks Shear as a confident and distinctive new voice, one with a clear sense of tone and character. At the same time, it offers Amanda Peet a long-overdue showcase for her depth and vulnerability. The result is a film that feels mature, genuine, and deeply affecting- a small but meaningful triumph. It’s better than I could have imagined.
