One probably shouldn’t be surprised that Sofia Coppola would be good at making a documentary, especially when it’s about her good friend, Marc Jacobs. The fashion designer has, almost quietly, established himself as a pivotal artist in his craft over the past 20 years. He’s undoubtedly worthy of his own documentary, but Coppola goes beyond simple admiration. She uses her keen eye to highlight his fashion, his cultural impact, and digs just enough beneath the surface to show what makes him such a phenomenal designer. Marc by Sofia drapes the audience in the genuine greatness of a master at work.

Like many documentaries, Coppola employs familiar stylistic beats, but what sets hers apart is its breakneck pacing. The director of The Virgin Suicides wastes no time, structuring the film around three key elements: talking-head interviews with Jacobs himself, archival footage of his past shows, and behind-the-scenes coverage leading up to his 2025 fall-winter show. Through this three-pronged approach, Coppola effectively captures Jacobs’ past, present, and future.

What feels somewhat lacking, however, is a deeper exploration of Jacobs’ personal life. We hear about his mother, his abusive father who left, and his stylish grandmother who introduced him to the beauty of fashion. These elements are touched on, but not fully explored, leaving the audience wanting a more intimate understanding of the man behind the brand.

What isn’t lacking is a clear depiction of why Jacobs has achieved such greatness. He’s a designer who rose from humble beginnings at Perry Ellis, moved on to Louis Vuitton, and found tremendous success with his own label. No one leaves Marc by Sofia questioning why he’s considered one of the finest fashion designers of the past 40 years.

Beyond the obvious friendship between subject and director, Marc by Sofia feels like the perfect first documentary for Coppola. It’s a story steeped in the excess of the fashion industry, centered on a designer who has become a staple of her native New York, all told with an energy reminiscent of Marie Antoinette. That’s what makes Coppola such a compelling filmmaker- when she aligns herself with a legendary figure like Marc Jacobs, the result is effortlessly high fashion.
