There has always been a fascination in the horror genre with objects that characters absolutely should not mess with—yet, as surely as the sun rises, curiosity always wins. The Ring is a classic example: no sane person would play a videotape that guarantees death in seven days, but if they didn’t, the movie wouldn’t exist. Whistle, the newest film from Corin Hardy (The Hallow, The Nun), taps into that same irresistible temptation. It follows a group of high school students who discover an ancient Mayan whistle; if they blow into it, anyone who hears the sound will meet their predestined death. It’s the perfect setup for solid horror, and Hardy delivers with bloody kills and unpredictable thrills.

The film centers on Chrys (Dafne Keen), the new kid in town- an orphan living with her cousin, Rel (Sky Yang), and nervously adjusting to a new high school. The rest of the group includes the popular girl Grace (Ali Skovbye), jock Dean (Jhaleil Swaby), and brooding loner Ellie (Sophie Nélisse). Chrys soon learns that the student who previously used her locker has recently died, which explains why she finds a wooden skull whistle waiting for her to claim. Once the artifact comes into her possession, strange spirits begin haunting the group, and when Dean dares to blow the whistle, the curse of death is placed upon them all.

Like other horror films built around a series of inventive deaths—Final Destination immediately comes to mind- the best part of Whistle is its creativity. The twist is that while each character is ultimately doomed, hearing the whistle accelerates their fate. This allows Hardy and writer Owen Egerton to flesh out meaningful backstories while finding imaginative ways for death to arrive. One character’s rapid demise from old age is darkly amusing, while another’s death involving an industrial wood chipper creates an image you won’t soon forget. Hardy’s strong command of special effects, paired with characters we genuinely care about, makes Whistle stand out.

It would be easy to dismiss Whistle as just another horror movie where teens are picked off one by one, but Corin Hardy’s skill behind the camera- and his knack for memorable kills- elevates it. There’s a genuine complexity to these angsty teens: searching for love, fearing death, yet lacking the self-control to avoid the very artifact that will destroy them. It may be a familiar horror trope, but when it’s executed this well, the result is a film that plays a chilling tune. Don’t blow it- Whistle is an awesome horror movie.
