The feeling of discovering a film that was there the whole time is a rush. House Party was a movie I knew of– I’d heard the title, knew the hip-hop duo Kid ’n Play starred in it- but I’d never actually seen it. The truth is, this was a predominantly Black film, about the Black experience and Black culture, and for a white kid from the Northwest Side of Chicago, my parents weren’t taking me to see House Party.

Now, I can gratefully say I’ve corrected that blind spot in my film education, and the revelation of Reginald Hudlin’s House Party is glorious. The experience is only enhanced by the Criterion Collection’s magnificent 4K release, complete with special features and a fresh invitation to audiences who may have once dismissed it, as I did. House Party is a beautiful film about high school kids enjoying life despite the stresses of being a teenager, and it reminds us how wonderful it was to be young.

The premise is as simple as it gets. Kid (Christopher Reid) is desperate to attend his best friend Play’s (Christopher Martin) house party- especially since popular girls Sidney (Tisha Campbell) and Sharane (A.J. Johnson) might be there, and it’s a chance for him to show off his rapping skills. Unfortunately, a recent detention threatens to derail his plans. With pressure from his father (Robin Harris), this group of high school kids will have to pull out every trick they know to make the night happen.

It would be silly to reduce House Party to just another teenage party movie, because once it gets going, it’s clear there’s something special here. At heart, it’s a musical- punctuated by Kid’s slick rhymes and anchored by an iconic dance sequence, driven by the electric DJ skills of Martin Lawrence’s Bilal. The choreography alone is guaranteed to stretch a smile from ear to ear. While films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Sixteen Candles, or Valley Girl helped pave the way, Hudlin tapped into something deeper than teenage rebellion. There’s a genuine love and respect for youth, freedom, and community, and an understanding of the joy these spaces can create. The entire vibe of House Party is infectious.

If there’s any doubt about the film’s importance, just look at what it inspired: Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, Steve McQueen’s romantic night of dancing in Lovers Rock, or even the chaotic spectacle of Project X. These films are wildly different, yet none of them exist without House Party. It’s no surprise Hollywood tried to capitalize on sequels and remakes, but the lightning was at its most electric in the original. Hudlin made an instant classic.

To discover House Party is to feel an electric jolt of pure joy. What radiates from the cast and the production is happiness- a kind of chemistry that can’t be quantified but is unmistakable on screen. I felt it in the dancing, the music, the boldly retro ’90s fashion, and the film’s boundless energy. The Criterion Collection exists to celebrate movies like House Party. It’s never too late to discover a great film, and some electricity can only be bottled- thankfully- in a crisp 4K release, ready to keep the party going.
