To shoot your film in black and white is almost a rite of passage in independent filmmaking. Many of cinema’s greatest directors began their careers working in black and white or under severe budgetary constraints, but beyond economics, the format creates an aesthetic that few modern films can match. The new independent feature Meta Take One, directed by John Dierre and Ryan A. Dutter, is a sharp and inventive crime drama about a filmmaker whose latest production unravels over the course of one disastrous night. As the evening spirals into chaos, he and his crew must finish filming, assemble a rough cut, and somehow stay alive before a group of criminals catches up to collect the money they’re owed. Meta Take One is audacious and impressive from beginning to end, boasting inventive filmmaking and captivating performances.
The crew consists of John the Director (EJ Ezeruo), his leading man Damon the Actor (Ernest Emmanuel Peeples), Marden the Sound Guy (John Romanski), and Tess the Cinematographer (Aminah Williams). They begin the night shooting a robbery scene inside a convenience store, hoping to get in and out before anyone notices. Multiple takes become necessary because they’re filming quickly without permits or permission. Before long, a real security guard mistakes the production for an actual robbery, and when Damon accidentally shoots him, the night transforms from guerrilla filmmaking into a desperate fight for survival. From that moment on, John and Damon find themselves trapped in an increasingly dangerous series of events.
Much like Method, which I reviewed last week, Dierre and Dutter explore the lengths artists are willing to go for their work. What makes Meta Take One even more compelling, however, is its focus on two men facing the same nightmare from different perspectives. John becomes obsessed with salvaging the footage, convinced that no matter how violent or disturbing it may be, it has to become his movie. Damon, meanwhile, is simply a man who keeps finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. As the night unfolds, both characters reveal unexpected sides of themselves while being pushed to their emotional and moral limits in pursuit of their respective crafts.
The film’s greatest strength is the sharp writing and confident direction from Dierre and Dutter, who have crafted something that feels both authentic and refreshingly original. It’s difficult not to think of the early work of filmmakers like Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino, or Martin Scorsese while watching Meta Take One. Its single-night structure recalls After Hours, while its colorful ensemble and intersecting chaos evoke Pulp Fiction. Yet the film never feels derivative. Instead, it finds its own identity by making the violence feel accidental rather than inevitable, leaving the audience wondering whether these filmmakers will even have a movie to show by the time the sun comes up.
Meta Take One is an exhilarating blend of crime thriller and character drama, while also serving as a thoughtful meditation on the sacrifices required to make independent films and the strain those sacrifices place on creative partnerships. The crisp black-and-white cinematography, lived-in dialogue, and unpredictable narrative keep the momentum high throughout, but the film’s standout element is Ernest Emmanuel Peeples’ performance. He delivers the kind of commanding turn that suggests he’s a character actor on the verge of breaking out. Meta Take One embodies everything I love about discovering independent cinema. The art form continues to thrive because filmmakers are still willing to create bold, uncompromising work like this, doing whatever it takes to bring their vision to life.
