Twenty years ago, the world was a different place. The internet was in the middle of a Facebook boom, fashion was filtered through E! News, and magazines still served a purpose in a hospital waiting room. We knew those days were fading, but The Devil Wears Prada stood at an iconic intersection of fashion, culture, and drama- the kind that has yet to be replicated. Now arrives The Devil Wears Prada 2, a legacy sequel that understands just how far the world has moved on. With Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt all returning, the result is a sharp, entertaining mix of comedy, standout performances, and timely commentary on the state of journalism- a sequel that absolutely slays.

We catch up with Andy Sachs (Hathaway), once an intern at Runway, now a journalist writing hard-hitting stories in New York. As expected, the industry is collapsing, and Andy loses her job to budget cuts. Meanwhile, Runway is struggling as well, rocked by a bombshell report exposing its ties to sweatshop fashion. The pressure mounts on editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep) and her ever-loyal Nigel (Tucci) to salvage the brand before it fades into irrelevance. Enter Andy- latte in hand- brought back into the fold to oversee editorial, repair the magazine’s image, and help restore its former prestige.

There’s an initial awkwardness in returning to this world, as many long-awaited sequels come polished with a modern gloss that smooths away the original’s texture. But director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna understand that this story is about the people beneath the fashion. The razor-sharp insults are dialed back, replaced with something more revealing: watching Miranda twist herself into knots to avoid the kind of cutting remarks she once wielded so effortlessly. It adds a fascinating new dimension to her character. Streep, as always, delivers- peeling back layers to reveal the cost of power, the strain of competition, and the constant balancing act of navigating male-dominated spaces.

A major subplot follows Andy reconnecting with Emily (Blunt), now working at Dior and still harboring grudges from her Runway days. Their dynamic adds tension and humor, especially as Andy takes on a near-missionary zeal to revive the magazine. Opposing her are a pair of opportunistic tech-bros (Justin Theroux and B.J. Novak), eager to gut the company and pivot it into something soulless- and absurdly futuristic.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t a perfect outfit. Theroux’s character grates more than he entertains, and Andy’s romantic subplot lacks spark. Still, the film comes impressively close to what it aims for. Its narrative feels honest about the challenges women face in the workforce, the precarious state of journalism, and the fight to keep legacy industries alive. And yes- the fashion delivers. The film indulges in just the right amount of visual decadence, pairing it with a story genuinely invested in giving its characters meaningful arcs.

Fans of the original will find plenty to love here, while The Devil Wears Prada 2 confidently struts on its own high heels in 2026. It may not surpass the original, but it establishes its own identity with style and purpose. Hathaway shines, while Streep, Tucci, and Blunt elevate the material with depth and charisma. It’s refreshing to see a sequel this invested in substance- championing journalism, celebrating fashion, and stitching it all together into something that fits remarkably well.

Can we get more of this, please? That wasn’t a question.
