On one hand, Untitled Home Invasion Romance (an awful title) has a sitcom-like premise. On the other hand, it delivers a steady string of surprises that make for an entertaining dark comedy. The biggest surprise, however, is that Jason Biggs is not only the lead but also the director. The American Pie star draws from his experience working in late-’90s and early-2000s studio comedies, channeling that knowledge into a film that feels like a welcome throwback. Untitled Home Invasion Romance whips up a sharp, unpredictable getaway of a movie.
Biggs stars as Kevin, an actor desperately searching for his next role while also trying to repair his fractured marriage to Suzie (Meghan Rath). Recently separated, the couple attempts to reconnect with a quiet escape to the countryside. Kevin, however, has another plan: he hires his friend Ernie (Arturo Castro) to stage a fake home invasion, putting Suzie in danger so Kevin can swoop in as her hero. Predictably, things spiral out of control, and when Suzie kills the intruder, Kevin suddenly has far more to save than just his marriage.
From the outset, it’s obvious that Kevin’s plan will collapse, but it’s what happens after everything goes to hell that makes the film work. Written by Joshua Paul Johnson and Jamie Napoli, the screenplay takes a fun meta approach with Biggs, who plays an actor known for a hit movie yet desperate to escape his own shadow. That angle lands plenty of laughs, but the real fun comes from the snowball effect: one mistake turns into two, characters reveal unexpected sides of themselves, and the film shifts genres, sliding from comedy into surprising touches of horror.
That’s not to say Untitled Home Invasion Romance is without flaws. Its predictability works against it at times, and supporting characters- Anna Konkle as the local sheriff and Justin H. Min as an ex-boyfriend- feel underserved despite being among the film’s highlights. Still, Biggs keeps the story moving, and the tension cranks up. At a brisk 85 minutes, it’s hard not to admire his confident direction, balancing witty humor with a romantic thriller edge that feels like Gone Girl colliding with So I Married an Axe Murderer.
Yes, the title is terrible and deserves a rethink. But it’s refreshing to be genuinely surprised by a film like Untitled Home Invasion Romance. More impressive is watching Jason Biggs reinvent himself behind the camera- it’s a career move that suits him. It’s certainly a better option than trying to revive American Pie. That would be about as desperate as staging a fake robbery to play the hero…and we all know how that turns out.
