André Holland stars as Tarrell, an accomplished artist living in the suburbs with his radiant musician wife, Aisha (the luminous Andra Day), and their son, Tre. When Tarrell’s estranged father, La’Ron (John Earl Jelks), unexpectedly reenters their lives, he arrives battered and bruised, recovering from homelessness and a recent mugging. As he seeks redemption and sobriety, a poignant confrontation unfolds. During a moment of vulnerability, while helping his mother Joyce (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) pack for a move, La’Ron asks for forgiveness and a chance to reconnect. But, as we know, healing wounds is rarely that simple.
At this juncture, the essence of Exhibiting Forgiveness reveals itself. Kaphar, also an accomplished artist, makes it clear that forgiveness and mending relationships require immense effort. In powerful exchanges, we witness Tarrell and Joyce delve into the roots of his anger—Ellis-Taylor’s performance is breathtaking. They confront his father’s abandonment, drug addiction, and episodes of abuse, yet Joyce asserts her enduring love for La’Ron. This declaration marks a profound shift that leaves Tarrell struggling to comprehend.
