Jessica Hausner- Hot Seat Interview- Director- Club Zero
The films of Jessica Hausner are not for the weak of mind. The Austrian-born director has a history of movies that deal with themes of religion, how we raise children, how we operate as a society, or just what drives humans. Her newest film Club Zero is about a teacher at a school (played spectacularly by Mia Wasikowska) who convinces her students that needing food is a state of mind and a weakness that can be driven out. On top of the complex themes, Hausner also has a fascinating visual language, where the sets and costumes could be talked about for hours. I was lucky to have Hausner speak with me about being raised in a house of artists, working with Wasikowska, and trusting the audience to get her movies. Watch it here:
