Brooklyn Horror Film Festival- Five Must-See Movies
2018 been quite the year for horror movies. We are getting a new Halloween film this year, Hereditary was one of the scariest movies in the last 10 years, Cinepocalypse was another fantastic film festival, and now AMovieGuy.com is going back to the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival! And what a lineup do they have in store for you! There are 29 feature films, including anniversary screenings of Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse, the legendary slasher flick Sleepaway Camp, and the premiere of The Clovehitch Killer. There’s so many good movies this year it is almost impossible to come up with five movies that I think you must-see, but I have a job to do, so here are AMovieGuy.com’s suggestions of what to see at the 2018 Brooklyn Horror Film Festival:
MOVIE: STARFISH
DIRECTED BY: A.T. WHITE
SCREENING: SATURDAY OCTOBER 13th @ 8:00PM
The description of Starfish says it is a combination of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and H.P. Lovecraft. Just the thought of that has me intrigued. This is director A.T. White’s directorial debut, which says a bunch because Starfish is the centerpiece of the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. It involves a woman named Aubrey (Virginia Gardner), grief stricken by the loss of her friend, and left to find a way to stop the end of the world. The praise for Starfish has been constant and I can’t wait to see it.
MOVIE: LUZ
DIRECTED BY: TILMAN SINGER
SCREENING: SATURDAY OCTOBER 13th @ 6:00PM
A movie that I missed at Fantasia and was a massive hit at Fantastic Fest is Luz. What’s most interesting about director Tilman Singer’s film, is that it was his student thesis film, so this is as raw of a cut as you will get. It is described as being inspired by Lucio Fulci’s work and involves two women getting revenge on those who have used and abused them, or any unlucky soul who crosses their path. Luz has already been called the “breakthrough gem of 2018” and this time I am not going to miss it.
MOVIE: KNIFE + HEART
DIRECTED BY: YANN GONZALEZ
SCREENING: THURSDAY OCTOBER 11th @ 7:00PM
Knife + Heart is the opening night movie for BHFF so right away you know it is going to be something. Then you read the synopsis, and how it was shot on 35mm, and then you finally read about how it was inspired by 1970’s De Palma, Argento, and Friedkin and then you go buy as many tickets as possible. I cannot wait to see director Yann Gonzalez’s work in what is described as a bloody murder mystery. If this doesn’t get you interested, nothing will.
MOVIE: THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER
DIRECTED BY: DUNCAN SKILES
SCREENING: TUESDAY OCTOBER 16th @ 7:00PM
As many of our audience knows, I was a massive fan of Charlie Plummer’s work in All the Money in the World. He’s already making a name for himself as an actor on the rise and he is the star in The Clovehitch Killer. He plays a boy scout named Tyler that befriends someone obsessed with The Clovehitch Killer. Duncan Skiles is a director waiting to breakout in the horror scene and his work here just sounds amazing. On top of all that, early reports are that Dylan McDermott has a great performance as playing Plummer’s dad. Those reasons alone are more than enough to entice you into seeing The Clovehitch Killer.
MOVIE: THE RUSALKA
DIRECTED BY: PERRY BLACKSHEAR
SCREENING: THURSDAY OCTOBER 18th @ 7:00PM
Director Perry Blackshear made a name for himself with his low-budget directorial debut success They Look Like People. Honestly, I was not a big fan of that film, so I am hoping the second time around has made Blackshear’s work become more seasoned. The style and skills are certainly there, and with a strong cast of MacLeod Andrews and Margaret Ying Drake leading the charge, The Rusalka looks to be a major success. It’s about a man named Tom, who rents out a lake house, which legend has it is haunted by a woman who drowned there years before. New people arrive and Tom begins to fear that the people he thinks are friends or neighbors, are actually spirits that haunt him. Should be fun and a great way to close out BHFF 2018.
