There is always that one teacher, professor, coach, or mentor who makes a lasting impact on our lives. For me, several people helped shape the person I am today. My high school theology teacher, Mr. Johnson, taught me about kindness and what it means to be human. My high school English teacher, Ms. Callahan, inspired my love of literature and writing. My college professor, Mr. Kohl, deepened my understanding of cinema, while my football coaches taught me the importance of commitment and hard work. As a (somewhat) fully functioning human being, I owe these people an enormous debt of gratitude, and it’s difficult to measure the impact they had on my life. Misfit Mentor gives director Neil Garguilo an opportunity to do just that for his high school music teacher, Jamie Egan. What emerges is a portrait of a life worthy of attention, highlighting the profound influence one person can have during our formative years. The result is a warm, heartfelt documentary that serves as a fitting tribute to a remarkable teacher.

The opening moments of Misfit Mentor feature a collection of former students explaining just how important Mr. Egan was to them. Living and teaching in New Jersey, Egan embodied the idea of the “cool teacher,” someone who genuinely connects with students without being harsh, judgmental, or condescending. Even more fascinating, Jamie Egan is also a member of the ska-punk band Catch 22, and his influence on his students was so profound that some of the kids he once taught eventually became members of his band. Talk about coming full circle.

As documentaries go, Misfit Mentor might not initially seem all that extraordinary to an outside viewer. In fact, I found myself wondering, “Why is this person so special that he deserves his own documentary?” But as Garguilo follows Egan through his everyday life, that question gradually becomes easier to answer. We are welcomed into Egan’s home, where he raises his three children following the death of his wife. Although the documentary does not fully explain the circumstances surrounding her passing, the loss clearly continues to weigh heavily on him. Egan also opens up about his struggles during therapy sessions, discussing the abuse he suffered as a child and his ongoing battle with loneliness. Through it all, music remains his saving grace.

That connection becomes especially moving in scenes where Egan comforts a bandmate who is dealing with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. These moments are both beautiful and heartbreaking, revealing the compassion that defines Egan as a person. His commitment to the people around him extends far beyond the classroom, continuing long after the school bell has rung and his students have graduated. He is the kind of person who remains present in the lives of others when they need him most.

It is Egan’s openness, compassion, and kindness that make Misfit Mentor work so well. Garguilo doesn’t attempt to oversell his subject, exploit his flaws, or manufacture a narrative that isn’t there. Instead, he simply allows us to witness the genuine difference one person can make in the lives of others. My cynicism occasionally threatened to creep in, but Egan’s life proves more than worthy of the praise he receives. More documentaries should focus on the lives of people who bring joy, offer guidance, and make the world a better place simply by being themselves. The teachers and mentors who shape us leave lasting impressions, and Misfit Mentor is a heartfelt reminder of just how much those relationships matter.
